Family Fun Night - Early Childhood

Sometimes being a parent means having a lot of questions. At December’s Family Fun Night, parents were given the opportunity to ask away! Dr. Don Murk, Professor of Early Childhood Education and Chair of the Department of Education at Messiah College volunteered to speak with parents. He provided information about early childhood development, took time to discuss parenting issues and answered questions raised by parents.

While parents got to meet with Dr. Murk, children created a variety of different holiday crafts. From candycanes to paper penguins and tree ornaments, children were busy crafting away. Thank you to all of the Downey families who participated in this evening along with Downey staff and Dr. Murk who made the event possible.

Holiday Show and Play60

On December 19th, Downey students packed the gym bleachers while parents crowded the audience. This year's holiday show was a huge success. Students wore Christmas colors and some even dressed as reindeer with antlers and glowing noses. Music teacher, Mr. Kohler led the students in a variety of holiday songs including one from the movie Frozen.

After the singing concluded, Coach K from the LeSean McCoy Foundation celebrated Downey’s completion of the Play60 challenge. This program promotes wellness through challenging students to play actively for 60 minutes each day. Over the past four weeks, teachers helped students explore different ways they can stay active at home and at school.

PennLive and Fox 43 got in on the action at the holiday show! To see their news stories, click on the links below.
