Guests Visit Downey for Incentive Day Focused on Careers

2014-10-29 10.58.00_edited.jpg

In the October update, there was information about the incentive day which took place on October 29th. This day was focused on exposing students to a variety of career options through visits from Messiah College students and professionals within the community. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event and took time to educate Downey’s young leaders. Neil Weaver, Director of Innovative Technology, was among those in the community who volunteered to participate in this event at Downey. Along with a couple of iPads and a pair of Google Glass, Neil brought energy and enthusiasm to Mr. Lippy’s first grade class. He presented the students with these pieces of technology and explained how they can and are being used in people’s day-to-day jobs. He also highlighted the new usage of reporters using Google Glass to capture stories for the media. Neil remarked that he was impressed with how much students already knew about the technology he brought in with him. He appreciated the energy the students had as well as their curiosity about his presentation. He highlighted how impressed he was with the way teacher, Mr. Lippy worked with the students and created a healthy environment for learning. If you are interested in getting involved at Downey like Neil, please visit our “Get Involved” page and see what kind of opportunities there are!

Students Play60

If you were watching football over Thanksgiving weekend, you may already be familiar with the Play60 Challenge. It was launched by the NFL campaign and promotes wellness through encouraging students to play for 60 minutes each day. At Downey, the LeSean McCoy Foundation is sponsoring this program and students have been taking on the challenge since November 17th. This challenge is being supported by staff at Downey and will continue throughout December. Check back in for December’s update to get more information about how the challenge went.

Have you met this new face yet?

My name is Jaylene Nissley and I am an AmeriCorps PACC VISTA and Together for Tomorrow Coordinator. For some, I may be a familiar face, but if you've been wondering who I am, I'll tell you a bit about me.

To explain it simply, my job is to be the communicator between Messiah College and Downey School. I meet with the action teams at Downey who are focused on improving student achievement and making Downey a great place to learn. I also work on building the partnership between Messiah and Downey as well as with the local community. So far I have enjoyed getting to know the teachers and staff, but my favorite part of my day is when I get to interact with Downey’s leaders, the students! Prior to this position, I was a Social Work student at Messiah College. While I was a student, Alison French, who was the current TFT Coordinator, visited my class to introduce the initiative and invite us to join in the partnership. This sparked my interest in Downey and in the spring of 2014 I completed my senior field placement there.

Please feel free to approach me with anything relating to Together for Tomorrow or just to say hello!

The Leader In Me took notice of Downey’s parental involvement and wrote a blog entry about Downey being a place for parents as well as students. Take a few moments to read about it here!
