October was a month of growth for both Downey and Messiah partners. The month included a luncheon for service learning professors at Messiah College, professional development day training on Leader In Me for staff at Downey, this year's first Family Fun Night, and participation in the 2014 PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference. On top of all that, Downey was featured in PennLive which showed off our future leaders and great school!

Downey was featured in a recent PennLive article. Take a few minutes to read all the positives things happening at Downey here or watch the clip below. Way to go Downey!
Messiah College Luncheon
On October 8th, a Together for Tomorrow luncheon was held at Messiah College for faculty already partnering with Downey and those who are interested in doing so. TFT updates were discussed as were many different possibilities of ways in which Messiah and Downey can work together! Thanks to all who participated!
Professional Development Day at Downey

During teachers’ professional development day at Downey, Lynne Fox, the school’s Leader In Me coach and consultant visited for the day. She provided guidance and training on Leader In Me and got to check in and see what kind of progress Downey has been making. She was very happy to see all of the ways Downey is grabbing a hold of Leader In Me and successfully making it a part of the school! Downey, fantastic work! Thank you for your investment in Harrisburg’s young leaders!
2014 PASA-PSBA Education Excellence Fair

This year Downey was chosen to participate in the Education Excellence Fair at the PASA-PSBA Conference which was held at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center! Two
of Downey's teachers, Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Krankowski, along with two student leaders joined Principle, Mr. Travis Peck in celebrating Downey. Students displayed leadership by handing out information about Together for Tomorrow and Leader In Me to those who stopped by the booth. They also showed visitors their leadership notebooks, explaining their goals, the seven habits and their accomplishments as leaders and students.

Family Fun Night Success!
Our action teams have been hard at work with all sorts of goals, events and projects. October 23rd marked this year’s first Family Fun Night, an event hosted by teachers and staff to provide time for students and families to learn and play together. This month, 29 families with over 100 people took part in the event. Students worked with their families to create a section in their leadership notebooks about themselves. These included things they like to do, important people in their lives, pictures and more.
Each month the team will be providing Family Fun Nights with a variety of different themes and activities including parent classes! If you’re interested in participating in these events, the next one is coming up on November 20th from 5:00PM - 6:30PM. The night will feature a cooking class followed by family board games! Contact Stephanie Jackson or Shannon Lippy with questions!
Incentive Day
On October 29th, Messiah College students, as well as professionals from the community visited Downey to share about their career fields. Students and teachers were very positive about the experience. Check back for more information about the day in November’s blog post!
